Our regional clinic, located in Cedar Rapids, is the first of its kind in Iowa and we routinely accomplish our goal of performing 55-60 surgeries per day. Since opening in 2013, we have spayed or neutered over 80,000 animals, addressing the pet overpopulation crisis.

Spay Neuter Surgical Veterinarian

Iowa Humane Alliance (IHA) is a mission driven, non-profit organization that focuses on high-volume, low-cost, high-quality spay and neuter surgeries. IHA’s regional clinic is in Cedar Rapids Iowa and offers services to pet owners, 30+ shelter/rescue partners, and community cat caretakers. Communication and consistency create an efficient workflow enabling our team to routinely perform 50-60 surgeries per day. 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform 35 spay neuter surgeries in a normal workday
    • 10 canine surgeries of varying sexes and weights
    • 25 feline surgeries with approximately 40% being community cats
  • Pre-surgical exams, recheck appointments, and post-surgical exams.
  • Perform all surgical duties adhering to IHA’s standardized techniques and protocols
    • Standard of care – all patients are treated as individuals and should receive the highest quality of care. Considerations when evaluating for surgery

      • Anesthetic risk
      • Post-surgical complication concerns
      • Quality of life
    • Drug protocol
    • Surgical guidelines
      • Right flank spay technique for all female felines
      • Canine castration is scrotal, closed cord technique with deep SQ closure only
      • All patients receive a tattoo
      • Community cats receive an ear tip
    • Safety protocol

This position pays a salary range of $95,000-$105,000, compensating for relevant experience. Benefits include: 6 paid holidays, paid vacation which increases with longevity, membership to a national organization, reimbursement for costs incurred relating to CE hours, at-cost pet care/prescriptions, and a stipend for health insurance. A typical day is 8-8 ½ hours (between 8 am-5 pm) Monday – Friday. We would prefer a candidate with relevant experience, but it is not a requirement. We are open-minded, flexible, and willing to train on-site at our clinic.
